Living in Florida means being prepared for hurricane season every year. The good news: a little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your home and family safe.
Start with your home. Trim trees and shrubs near your house, secure or store outdoor furniture, and check that your garage door is hurricane-rated. If you have hurricane shutters, test them now — not when a storm is 48 hours out.
Build a supply kit with at least 7 days of water (one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, a hand-crank radio, and important documents in a waterproof bag.

After a storm, wait for official all-clear before going outside. Downed power lines, flooded roads, and debris are serious hazards. Check on your neighbors, especially those who live alone.
